5/1/2023 0 Comments Deathspank the baconing iconA new charge attack has also been implemented for all ranged weapons.Īnd while these new abilities help alleviate some of the monotony that was seen in the previous titles (where the strategies boiled down to hacking away at an enemy while chugging down health potions), it never feels like enough to truly deviate from that creeping feeling of tedium. There have been a few small additions to the core combat, such as the ability to reflect long-range attacks and push enemies away with your shield. The inventiveness of the humor doesn't extend into the gameplay half as well, with The Baconing never expanding beyond the confines of the first two entries. Unfortunately, the laughs can only keep the game afloat for so long, and oftentimes they don't feel like enough. Regardless, it very much works in the game's favor and makes for what is likely the funniest DeathSpank game yet. Maybe it's because sci-fi is such a rich genre, one that many of us are already intimately familiar with. More than any of the others games in the series, the jokes are fast and relentless throughout the whole experience, and they rarely miss their mark. This is probably The Baconing's greatest strength. With an even bigger wealth of content to derive jokes from, the game hits you thick and fast, rarely letting up from its barrage of DeathSpank-iness. The game kicks off in a way that will be instantly familiar to fans-well-paced quests that sweep you from one location to another at a steady pace, a plentiful supply of enemies to hack and shoot your way through, and imitigable plethora of looted goods. If you can name it within the sci-fi genre, there is probably a solid nod somewhere in The Baconing. Everything is in here, from Robocop to Tron to even Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and a ton more. Fantasy and modern war parodies make way for yet another easily pastiched genre-science fiction-and this game nails it perfectly. With a new DeathSpank comes a new setting. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but familiarity and repetition only go so far. This is the first purchase of 25 purchases from the App Store I actually thought was worth the price. If you're walking into this review having just played the previous two DeathSpank titles, you probably already know what to expect out of the Downtroddener of Justice's latest adventure, The Baconing. It is just too bad the only way to buy it today is by playing Russian Roulette on the App Store. I think it would add more zest to the game and give people a reason to play it again by offering 2 zany characters with different dialogues and abilities. I hope if there is another game from Hothead Games it will follow this game's depth and consider adding a female version of DeathSpank as a choice for the character. The Baconing is a game you will either love or hate it. The best way to describe The Baconing would be to stir into a pot the main character from the American Dad cartoon and mix in Machinarium and Diablo with a touch of WarCraft. It all follows the same quirky style throughout the game. Some of the spoken and audio dialogue is funny. The quest line starts off singular and later becomes forked offering side challenges to help improve your character's abilities. The pace of the game is as quick as you want it to be during your explorations. It's a nicely laid out click adventure world. In many facets The Baconing reminded me of Machinarium. I was expecting a lot less for this game and was pleasantly surprised how rich the details and experience was. The App Store needs a serious overhaul and a rethink. I originally intended to buy the game for someone else but that wasn't possible due to Apple's crazy policies and strict control. I took the chance and purchased this game. I hope the authors of this game are listening and watching. It would have offered a 60 minute trial and another avenue for sales without the scam store run by Apple. I can think of Game Tree Online and Mac Game Store that would have been a perfect fit and killed 2 birds with one stone. This game would have sold more copies had there been other ways to try it or purchase it. I must agree with Wolfeatsworld's comment.
